Renowned Chinese director Zhang Yimou announced on Friday that he will direct the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games handover performance at the closing ceremony of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.
This is the first time China will receive the flag at the handover performance at a Winter Olympics. Zhang revealed that he is still developing his idea for the eight-minute cultural performance heralding the start of the four-year countdown to the next Winter Olympics.
Beijing won the bid to host the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in July . Zhang, who directed “House of Flying Daggers” and “Hero,” is mostly known to Westerners as the chief director of the opening and closing ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics. Chief director Zhang Yimou said the performance would demonstrate a confident and modern China as well as convey a warm welcome in a high-tech way.
At the PyeongChang Olympic Stadium, where the opening and closing ceremonies will be held on the 10th day of the Chinese Lunar New Year, construction is basically done.

Zhang was also the chief director of both the opening and closing ceremonies of Beijing 2008 Summer Olympic Games. He said the previous shows told the story of China"s contributions to the world such as the inventions of paper, printing, gunpowder and the compass, along with icons including the Great Wall, the Terracotta Warriors, and the Silk Road. This time, Zhang is determined to present a much different story.
“We will aim to do a new show, an innovative show with new technology instead of telling the same story as before. It will be a modern performance, enhanced by high-tech,” Zhang said.
Technology used in innovation can always have challenges. At the Sochi Winter Games opening ceremony, the five Olympic rings were reduced to four due to a technical glitch.
With regard to this, Zhang noted: “We"ve seen the Olympic rings reduced to four once, so basic technologies need to be assured. It"s a double-edged sword and we have to test it over and over again.”
